What Is Kundalini? The Coiled Energy Asleep in Every Human Being 🌀

Kundalini is the divinity sleeping in every human being, coiled at the base of the spine. Its rising is the mind's whole journey home.
Most people meet the word in one of two places: a class that promises to "activate" it, or a frightening story about what happens when it wakes too fast. Both treat kundalini like a jolt of electricity in the body. Tantra describes something far larger, and far more personal.
Here is my case. Kundalini is your own sleeping potential, and its rising is the expansion of your mind. It lies dormant at the base of the spine in every human being. It rises through centers that govern the tendencies of the mind, and as it rises, those tendencies lose their hold. And it is woken by longing and by meditation, gradually, never by force.
What the Word Means 🌀
Kundalini means coiled.
Kundalini is a Sanskrit word, and it describes a shape: something lying in a coil. Tantra uses it for the spiritual force that rests, curled and asleep, in the lowest bone of the spine. It is divinity in a dormant form. As long as it sleeps, you live as a small, separate self. When it rises and unites with supreme consciousness, that separation ends.
Every picture shows a snake, so many assume kundalini is a serpent. The serpent is the shape of the word, not the thing. A coil looks like a sleeping snake, so the image stuck. But nothing is crawling inside you. The word describes potential wound up and waiting, the way a whole banyan tree waits inside a tiny seed.
Where It Rises 🪜
From the base of the spine to the crown of the head, kundalini rises through centers that govern the mind.
Along the spine lie a series of centers, and Tantra teaches that each one governs certain tendencies of the mind: the pulls of fear, desire, pride and the rest. As the coiled force rises past a center, the tendencies tied to it stop running your life. That is what raising kundalini means in practice: mastering the mind's tendencies, one level after another, until nothing small is left in charge.
At the crown of the head the journey ends. The coiled force unites with supreme consciousness, and the separate self merges into the infinite. This is the same inner process the old texts meant when they described a rite most people misunderstand: the coiled spiritual energy rising to unite with supreme consciousness at the crown.
Kundalini is not a separate path from Tantra. It is Tantra seen from the inside. Tantra means liberation through expansion, and the practical work of Tantra is to wake this sleeping force, expand it and unite it with the infinite. Kundalini is not a rival method. It is the name of what rises when the method works.
How It Wakes 🕯️
Kundalini rises when the mind longs for the infinite. It is never pulled up by force.
Tantra is precise about what wakes it: meditation, a mantra, and above all longing. A seed sprouts only when it is struck by light, water and soil. The coiled force wakes when it is struck by the mantra, but only once the desire to move toward the infinite has been aroused. Without that longing, the tradition says, it does not even wake. And once awake, it rises gradually, step by step, never in one leap.
Traditionally, the mantra is given by a teacher, along with the guidance to use it. That is what initiation is for: guidance on the path, not a gate in front of it.
You may have read frightening stories and wondered whether kundalini is dangerous. Any practice that works deeply on the mind can be difficult for some people, and that is why guidance matters. Look at what the tradition actually warns against. Its warnings are about method: forcing the mind away from what it enjoys, or forcing the breath without the inner focus and the guidance that should come with it. A mind dragged by force rebels, and the body pays for it. Tantra's way is the opposite of force: longing, meditation, and a rise that happens step by step.
Some try to awaken it with intense breathing exercises. Breathing exercises can make you feel a great deal, and feeling is not the same as rising. In this tradition, the lever is the mind's longing for the infinite. Without it, the practices that look most powerful from the outside never reach the goal.
Why Waking It Is Only the Beginning 🌅
Waking kundalini is the first step. Uniting it with the infinite is the goal.
The popular idea of a kundalini awakening stops exactly where Tantra starts. Waking the coiled force is not enough; it has to be raised, and finally united with supreme consciousness. That union is liberation, and it is the whole point.
And it is not rare. The same sleeping divinity lies coiled in every human being, in you as much as in anyone who ever lived. Nobody has more of it than you. Most people simply never wake it.
It is already coiled inside you. All it has ever waited for is your longing.
