Is Tantra About Sex? How a Science of Consciousness Was Sold as Sex 🔓

No. Tantra was sold as sex. It is a science of consciousness.

Type the word Tantra into a search bar and most of what comes back is about sex: workshops, techniques, books that promise better intimacy. So it is a fair question whether that is what Tantra really is.

Here is my case. Tantra is not about sex, and it never was. The word itself describes a science of the mind. The sex story has a history you can trace, with names and dates. And the one branch of the old texts that did describe a sexual rite read even that rite as an inner process.

What the Word Says 📜

Nothing in the word Tantra points to sex.

Tantra is a word from Sanskrit, the ancient language of the yoga and Tantra texts. Tan means to expand. Tra means to liberate. The word means liberation through expansion: a method, practiced step by step, that expands the mind until it is free.

That is the whole definition, and it describes a mind growing larger than everything that holds it. There is no second meaning hidden underneath. From beginning to end, the word describes the work of consciousness on itself.

Can that many people be wrong, when almost everyone says it is about sex? Yes, when they all learned it from the same place. Repetition is not evidence. A claim repeated a million times is still one claim, and it is only as true as its source. So look at the source.

Where the Sex Story Came From 📰

The sex story has a history, and you can trace it.

In 1906, an American named Pierre Bernard founded what he called the first Tantrik Order in America. The newspapers named him "Oom the Omnipotent" and filled their pages with scandal. In 1910 he was charged with kidnapping in New York and briefly jailed, and the charges were later dropped. The historian of religion Hugh Urban describes Bernard as the first in a long line of Tantric teachers to come under suspicion for their alleged sexual practices. The word arrived in America as a headline, and the headline stuck.

In the 1960s, young Americans who wanted to break through the strict morality of middle-class life saw in Tantra one way to do it. By the 1970s, in Urban's words, Tantra had come to be "more or less synonymous with liberation and freedom on every level." An industry grew on top of that meaning, and it is still selling.

Some say the West simply discovered what India had kept hidden. To test that, look at what the old texts actually say. Some schools of Tantra did describe a sexual rite. They were one branch of a very large tree, and even there the rite was understood as an inner process: the coiled spiritual energy within a person rising to unite with supreme consciousness at the crown of the head. The modern story kept the outer act and dropped the meaning. A branch is not the tree, and a branch cut away from its meaning is not even the branch.

What Tantra Actually Asks of You 🕯️

The practice at the heart of Tantra is meditation, and it is done by people living ordinary lives.

You sit still and train your attention, layer by layer, toward the deepest part of you. Nothing in it requires a partner, and nothing in it is done to anyone else. You can practice it alone, in a quiet room, before your day begins.

And Tantra does not ask you to give up your relationships. It is a path for householders: people with partners, children, jobs and bills, practicing in the life they already have. It does not make your partner the practice, and it does not make your body the enemy.

Some will ask why Tantra would set desire aside, if sexual energy is spiritual energy. Tantra does not set desire aside, and it never asks you to suppress it, because a desire you fight only goes underground. It gives desire a larger direction. Underneath every desire is a thirst for the limitless, and no single pleasure, however intense, was ever built to satisfy it. Tantra turns that thirst toward the only thing large enough to meet it.

Why the Label Costs You 🌍

As long as Tantra means sex, the science stays hidden.

Someone who wants the real thing searches the word and finds a workshop. Someone who would never go to that workshop decides Tantra is not for them, and walks away from the one science built to answer the questions they carry. Either way, the label keeps people from the knowledge as surely as the old secrecy did.

That is why the word must be given back its meaning.

Tantra was sold as sex. It is a science of consciousness, and it is open to you.
